Red Tail Black Variatus

Remarks:  The red tail black Variatus is a close relative of the common platy, Xiphophorus maculatus, and like their relatives, they are native to Central America, specifically Mexico. The best way to tell the difference between the two is that the red tail black Variatus has a more slender and elongated body along with a longer dorsal fin. Another similarity they have with the common platy is that they have been slectivey bred in captivity to have different color variations. This specific Variatus has a light orange to red body and a black tail that fades up toward the front of the body. 

  Red tail black Variatus are livebearers, meaning the females release live fry rather than laying eggs. It is recommended to keep more females than males, as males can easily harass females with relentless attempts to reproduce, leading to stress in the females. Outside of this, this little fish is very peaceful and hardy making it an excellent starter fish for beginner and experienced aquarists alike.
