Midnight Demasoni (Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Mozambique")
Remarks: The midnight demasoni (Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Mozambique") is known from the Mozambique coast of Lake Malawi. They bear a heavy resemblance to the more well known demasoni cichlid (Chindongo demasoni) with it being thought that they might be a locality of C. demasoni.
Like their close relative, the midnight demasoni was originally placed in the Pseudotropheus genus, but was later classified within the Chidongo genus following an examination of their teeth and skull structure. They also share the same feisty disposition, small size, algae-based diet, and stunning blue and black coloration seen in both males and females.
With such an aggressive and territorial demeanor, these mbuna can hold their own against other mbuna with the same attitude. Avoid placing them with more peaceful species as the midnight mbuna can quickly overwhelm and injure them. Their aggression can be lessened by ensuring they are given plenty of space and rockwork to break up territories. Having at least 2-3 females per male will also help reduce violent behavior.
Aside from their feisty nature, midnight demasoni can be a great mbuna species for beginner and experienced keepers alike as they are very hardy and prolific spawners. Also accounting for their elegant coloration and active behavior, it is easy to see why they have found their way into the tanks of many African cichlid enthusiasts.
