Festivum/Flag Cichlid
Remarks: Festivums, or flag cichlids, are some of the most popular aquarium fish from South America. Usually found in slow-moving waters, these peaceful cichlids fit nicely with almost any peaceful South American or soft water community tank. They make good tank mates for discus especially due to their peaceful nature and preference for soft, warm water just like discus do. Festivums sport red eyes, long trailing pelvic fins, and a thick black band running diagonally from the posterior tip of the dorsal fin through their eye and ending at the mouth. Upon maturity and when in the right conditions, their faces and bellies turn a vibrant yellow or orange. When stressed, black or gray stress bars appear running vertically throughout their body.
Ā Festivums are very difficult to sex and can be picky when choosing a mate, so if one plans on breeding them, it is recommended to purchase multiple juvenile fish and allow them to mature and pair off. Doing so will help ensure one ends up with at least one pair. These fish mate for life and typically are very good parents, so the effort and patience is more than worth it.
